Biography

Eldson Chagara is a Malawian freelance photo-journalist, born on November 1, 1971 at Lilongwe Bottom Hospital in the country’s capital city.

His first-hand experience in photography started when he was Eight. His first camera was a toy made of clay soil. Inspired by what he saw from the other side of the camera window (view-finder), Eldson grew up wanting to capitalize the available light and draw, using the camera, on paper. It was Eldson's inner-self that kept reminding him of what he saw on the first day.

He has since fell in love with this impersonator of the human eye, the camera. In short he is an artist.

His desire to become a photographer grew when he went to secondary school. Since he could not afford a camera, he used to borrow a compact camera from his friend Patrick. In a way, his passion for the light-drawing device compromised his studies. Sometimes he'd gamble his study time by snapping his fellow students at the expense of studies. But he managed his time. With little monies he made from selling his snaps, he bought his own "cheap and second hand "Plastic camera.

Although Eldson got good grades in secondary school, he never made it to the University. But he still wanted to do a course that would provide him chance for employment. Eldson pursued a Diploma program in Marketing and Sales Management in 1994.

It was after finishing this program that he took up his camera again while searching for a job. Eldson secured a totally different employment with Malawi Broadcasting Corporation-MBC. This is Malawi's state radio station. He joined as a Trainee Producer. It was in 1994.

While at MBC he acquired professional training and other media related courses in Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa and Zambia just to mention but a few. With the Egyptian scholarship, Eldson obtained a Diploma course in Mass Communication at the Institute for African Broadcasters in Cairo between 2000-2001.

Upon completion, Eldson rose to the position of Senior Reporter in 2002 but was not satisfied with his qualifications. He then enrolled with The University of Malawi as a mature student at The Malawi Polytechnic campus in Blantyre where he pursued a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism and Media Studies. All along he kept collecting images.
